Schwab was a very unique company. I was hired into the Corporate
Cashiering Systems Team, but was quickly absorbed into several division-
wide projects representing my management in planning long-term
organizational development. I also was accepted into the Technical
Specialist Program, a nine-month intensive training program. The program
included both project and soft-skills training, and a presentation of
our work to the highest levels of corporate management.
Schwab definitely had a culture of its own. I related particularly well
to most long-term company employees. I knew a number of people from
personal consulting assignments at Schwab in 1989-1990. There seemed to
be at least four levels of employees, based upon age & experience. The
legacy mainframe applications used by the corporate level operations
were generally staffed by older, long-time programmers. The newer, web-
based systems were run by younger, post-collegiate staff. The mainframe
work was less hyper- and more methodical, whereas the web development
environment was constantly in overdrive.
I was one of the few analysts on staff that could walk a specific
transaction from inception through all levels of systems and software to
its posting on the databases of record.
