Things are grim. Employee morale is at an all time low. Employess were
given a shot in the arm when Chuck returned but have since then been
dissapointed with what he's done (or not done). Selling off pieces of
the company is a start, but closing branches has really pissed off a
lot of people and caused them to lose some long time, loyal clients.
The jury is still out on the new comp plan effec 1/1/05. Some say it
will benefit those big producers and others say it's just one more lame
attempt for middle management to spin their wheels and try to justify
their paychecks. They will still have the same problem that they have
had for the last few years and that is they do not have an efficient
system for tracking sales results for the reps. A Sales Rep spends way
too much time trying to track and report his/her results. Not to
mention trying to keep up with the ever changing rules that Schwab
seems to change every time you turn around.
Try going in to a local branch and ask a sales rep the simple
question "How can I go about opening a new account?" ..step back and
watch him/her squirm..nothing is simple these days, not even opening a
new account. Prepare yourself for an hour long conversation and a "data-
dump" of information.
In summary, only time will tell if Chuck can restore this once great
company to it's former self. If anyone can, he can..
So, is Schwab worth betting on?! You're either getting in on the
ground floor at the beginning of great recovery ...or .. you gambled
and lost... good luck !
