Many people think that working for Canada Post is an easygoing job that
pays great. Well, they are right about one thing. The pay, and the
benefits (medical, dental, etc...) are good, but not great. The job,
however, can be extremely difficult physically, especially if you work
in the parcels sorting section like I do.
Aside from the demanding physical aspect of the job, there is also the
fact that we work on different shifts. Only sufficient seniority will
give you an opportunity for a day job. So most people (we number close
to 2000 in the Montreal mail processing plant), work either evening
shift or (gulp!) night shift. There are advancement opportunities for
those who are driven to reach higher position in the company. If you
are bilingual and posses strong leadership qualities, you can become
supervisor and work your way up.
The Post Canada employees are protected by a solid union: the CUPW
(Canadian Union of Postal Workers)since 1967. Except for the
supervisors, there is no particular dress code in the plant where I
work. Only the mail carriers are required to wear a uniform since they
represent the company's image in public places.
All in all, when I carefully weigh the pros and cons, I realize I
should have stayed in school. However, with the good pay and benefits
they give us, I don't think I'm entitled to complain. :)
