From anywhere, to anyone. That's the company's slogan - and they
deliver! (Pun intended) :)
When it comes to competition, we trample them. Companies like UPS and
FedEx even tried to file complaints against Canada Post in the past.
The reason? They argued that Canada Post had an unfair monopoly
advantage because of its federal institution priviledges. In other
words, the government backs-up Canada Post.
Well, I understand their frustration. Numbers don't lie, and speaking
of which, check out these numbers:
In the 2003 fiscal period, Canada Post Corporation processed 10.7
billion pieces of mail. In doing so, they served more than 32 million
Canadians and over one million businesses and public institutions.
Canada Post collects, processes, and delivers mail across the world's
second-largest country (second in geographical size only to Russia).
Each working day, Canada Post delivers an average of 37 million pieces
of mail, processed through 22 major plants and many other facilities,
to over 13 million addresses in Canada, and forwards mail to almost
every country in the world.
Canada Post is the 44th largest Canadian business in terms of revenue
and is the seventh largest employer in Canada with 55 000 employees.
Canada Post has commercial, operational, and financial links with over
200 postal administrations around the world.
The business outlook for Canada Post is good considering the
considerable adaptation the company had to undergo because of the
widespread use of the internet in the 90's. We've adapted quite well by
even joining the web community with our new online services.
What should Canada Post do to improve employee morale? Well, I thought
of a few things.
1- Give employee discounts on mail services. I know it's hard to
believe, but Canada Post employees pay the same price as everybody else
on postage! We should get a rebate - it would only be fair.
2- Year-end bonus. Considering how Christmas is the busyest time of the
year for Canada Post employees, it would only make sense to reward them
with a nice year-end bonus, or at least a turkey!
3- These two things, if applied, would surely contribute to better
employee morale. Ever heard of disgruntled postal workers? This is
probably Canada Post's greatest weakness.
