| Operation Maintenance Worker |
Hiring practices have changed dramatically since I interviewed for an
Operation Maintenance Worker position back on December 5, 1979. Back
then I met with the Local Manager of Cal Water in Los Altos, California
and he asked me a few questions about my background in construction,
told me I was hired and that was it. Today, the interview process is
much more thorough. About 12 questions are prepared prior to the
interviews. Some examples are: "What do you see as your major strengths
and weaknesses?" "Do you prefer to work alone or on a team? Why?" "What
did/do you enjoy most and least about your current/last job?" There are
usually three supervisors on the interview team. They take turns asking
questions and make note of the answers. They rate and rank the
prospective employee. If at the end of all the interviews there is more
than one employee that had a good interview, then they are called back
for a second interview. All interviewees are contacted when a decision
is made to let them know if they got the job or not.
