The California Water Service Company (Cal Water) has been in business
since 1926. It is the second largest private water purveyor in the
United States and is stockholder owned. Employees of California Water
Service Company generally stay for many years. It is not uncommon to
have employees retire after 30 plus years of service. In the "good old
days?" employee suggestions often fell on deaf ears. Not so anymore.
About five years ago a new President/CEO joined the company. He has made
great strides in bringing Cal Water into the new century. He has called
on all 800 employees to bring forth their ideas on ways that can help to
improve the way we do business and serve our customers. Every employee
at Cal Water has a voice and is given the power to make positive change
happen.
The company is an equal opportunity employer and is blessed with a
diverse work force. Diversity brings with it innovation from different
perspectives and is encouraged and welcomed. The company has a great
relationship with the union which is affiliated with the AFLCIO. (Most
districts are union.)Advancement within the union ranks is based on
senority. Advancement in management is through the interview process.
Field employees typically work from 8AM to 4:30PM, depending on the job
and the district. They wear uniforms (blue shirts, pants, and baseball
caps) that identify them as Cal Water employees. (The company pays for
the uniforms.) Office employees work from 8AM to 5PM. They wear typical
office attire. Prospective field employees need to have their
Distribution Certification to qualify for a job at Cal Water. This is
obtained by taking and passing an exam that is administered by the
California Department of Health Services. More information about this
may be obtained by calling 916-327-1139.
I personally started as an Operation Maintence Worker back in 1979.
Through hard work and a positive attitude I have worked my way up to
District Manager. This is not uncommon as most of Cal Water's
supervisors were former field and office employees. Probably the best
way to sum up Cal Water is that it is more like a family than a
business.
