Given BC's current business model (at least at the corporate level)
coupled with its needs for mid-level management talent, I personally
feel it is an ideal place to work. I certainly don't think that BC has
everything to offer for everyone. But if you're a highly motivated,
recreation-loving individual, BC won't do you wrong. The culture is
typical for a 150+ year old company-a bit stuffy, but in a cool way.
How many Fortune 500 companies have dynamic CEOs that sit down next to
you in an acquisition presentation, and after his lunch is delivered,
ask you if you want a fry? Diversity? We're trying. The general feel
is a bit like an old boys club (we have a barbershop in our basement),
but we recognize things are changing in the world and we try to reflect
those changes with our employee base. Hours? How much do you want to
work so that you can enjoy your boat on the weekend? C'mon-we're a
RECREATION company. Of course we employ the over-used term "work
hard/play hard", but we have to. We have to work hard so that we can
make our bowling league on Tuesday nights, workout sessions on Wednesday
mornings, pool tournaments on Friday nights, and get out on our boats on
the weekend. Dress code-business casual. Opportunities for advancement-
definitely a plus for prospective candidates reading this. BC recently
conducted a "talent review" and noted that although they were "strong to
quite strong" in terms of talent on the senior management level as well
as entry level positions (recent college grads), there was a G A P I N G
hole in terms of mid-level managers that would likely become the
candidates for senior managers and executives during the next 20 years
as the current level of management retired. As such, BC has been making
a strong effort to hire and retain candidates with 5-10 years of quality
working experience, MBAs, CPAs, and high quality industry experience.
Given this need, as well as the size of BC-a lot of mid-level managers
get extraordinarily high exposure to senior managment on a weekly, if
not daily basis. As I said previously, BC is not the perfect place to
work for everyone, but it does give you a lot of responsibility very
quickly.
