Firm is officially divided into "casualty" and "coverage" departments,
although "casualty" handles almost exclusively medical malpractice
and "coverage" handles other direct defense files in addition to
coverage cases.
Associates jokingly refer to themselves as "revenue generating units"
and are actively discouraged from attempting to bring in business.
2100 hours billed per year is required, although recent bonus payouts
seem to indicate that 2200+ may become the un-stated norm.
Rumors and innuendo regarding issues of partners' conduct outside the
practice of law are rampant, and partners appear to tolerate each other
for the sake of convenience.
Skill and career development is more or less a "throw them in and let
them swim (or sink)" mentality. Partnership track is extremely
political, and "vote swapping" among partners appears to be the norm.
Dress code is officially professional, but is not rigidly enforced
within the coverage department.
