Boeing is an older company with many issues due to its size and long
standing culture. There are always challenges to overcome, however,
change is a continuous process and has been for the last 10 years. As
part of Boeing management, I find it to be a stressful place to work in
most areas due to the downsizing and my position as a first line
manager. However, it is a cyclic business and with less orders, there
isn't a reason to produce as much product. Many improvements are
ongoing, sometimes they may not be in agreement with everyone's
philosophy but the goal is to continually move towards a better method
of developing, designing, building, and delivering a quality aircraft
for the customer. There will always be some setbacks with success. The
biggest challenge will be the culture of the "old" and the "new". There
are still many "old" who have difficulty moving on but as more "new"
employees come onboard with greater technical, teaming, and resilient
skills, it will continue to only get better. The Boeing I started with
in 1980 is not the Boeing I work for now, however, I too want to see
Boeing continue to its 100th and beyond birthday in 1916. I as a
manager continue to pursue change wherever possible in my realm to
provide better quality, cycle time, and reduce costs. Another challenge
will be the relationship of the company and its unions. They must
improve their relationship and support each other to ensure Boeing's
success in the future.
