I.T. Corporate Culture: The culture at Blue Cross Blue Shield of MN is shaped as much by history as by the current management. The company grew from one that had claims processers, customer service reps, and a few managers to one that depends on I.T., Marketing and other professional job classes to ensure its success. Many of the current managers and executives have worked their way through the ranks- particularly through the core areas of customer service and claims processing and they bring the commnand and control techniques they learned in these jobs to their current positions. The company is quite political- power is based both on position and on influence in the company so there is quite a bit of infighting and games. It is quite difficult to get a decision as managers and employees have a reluctance to be held accountable for them. This seems to come from a management propensity to blame people rather than process when things go wrong. These things being said, the day to day work life is not bad. Employees tend to be rather conservative, but are friendly. Diversity: There are some asian and indian programers working in I.T. Based on recent hiring and promotion decisions, I don't see a real emphasis on recruiting or promoting minority employees. There may be some undercurrents of racism- though it is quite subtle if it exists- I have never heard open comments about it. Hours: The hours are long in I.T. particularly for operations positions (the on call schedule is literally causing people to drop dead) and project managers. Be prepared to work long hours and feel overwhelmed with responsibilities. But, also take heart in the fact that people are judged more on relationships than on performance. As long as you don't totally screw up you will probably still do ok. Dress Code: This depends on position. I have worked in jobs at this company that require suits 7 days a week and jobs that allow jeans any day that I didn't have meetings. In I.T. expect to wear business casual unless you are a manager where dress slacks and a tie are the norm. Opportunities for Advancement: I have been promoted 3 times in 5 years. There are opportunities, as with any company, the opportunities decrease as you go higher in the organization.
