The overall business outlook for Blue Cross Blue Shield of MN is
somewhat threatened. Blue Cross has, in the past, enjoyed an almost
monopoly in this state. Other non profits have started to gain
substantial market share. There is also a move to have for profit
competitors enter the state.
The executive management are not usually cutting edge in their product
offerrings and our often reactive in response to competitors.
Fortunately at this point, there is not one strong competitor, they are
imitating inovations at numerous other firms. Perhaps they can be
thought of as a consolidator of innovation.
The investment in technology has been great making the I.T. shop rather
exciting. It is considered a strategic advantage for the company.
There are some problems in I.T. with system stability and there has been
some talk about outsourcing some of the I.T. areas. Preliminary
analysis, which I have been involved in, suggests that this would not be
cost effective (see the section on salary and benefits). So, the I.T.
division should be fairly stable. No lay-offs are rumored for this
year, though some are expected next year. In the past, they have
affected the operations side of the house more than the development
side. However, there is a new CIO, so that time will tell. Generally
lay off decisions reflect house cleaning... the weak, who should have
been taken care of through other means are elimintated. Make sure your
boss knows the value of what you are doing.
