The store I worked in was an awesome store and I enjoyed working with
and for all the people in Lynchburg. The district management was
supportive and available. However, the company is not a company I would
recommend anyone for employment. As a retail manager in a couple of
electronic retail stores, I have been able to compare the whole retail
experience. The hours in both Best Buy (and Circuit City) are the same,
dress code is similar, and advancement is similar. My problem were
policies involved in customer service. I worked as an Operations
Manager at both Circuit City and Best Buy and was, therefore, over
customer service. Circuit City provided policies and freedom for
managers to give the customers as much customer service as possible.
Best Buy has too many policies in place that hinder customer service:
1) Return/Exchange policies. Even within the return period, Best Buy
requires a technician to "check" all returns. In other words, let's say
you buy a camcorder and take it home and find that the light
intermittently comes on even when the item is turned off. You call the
manufacturer and the manufacturer walks you through a couple of
troubleshooting measures. Finally, the manufacturer tells you to return
your camcorder for a new one. You take the camcorder back to Best Buy
and the technicians look at it and can not duplicate the problem. They
will give you a hard time returning the item even though you just
purchased it a couple hours beforehand. You usually will have to get
mad at just return the item completely and then repurchase it if you
want the exchange. 2) Price Match. Their price match policy
technically says that they don't price match anything unless you first
purchase the item. That means you purchase the item at regular price
and then come back for the "price match." Some stores will price match
before the purchase, but that is technically against policy. There are
many stores that will NOT price match until after the item is purchased
because they don't want to mess up their "margin" numbers. These are
only a few of the policies in place that make it difficult for
customers. Also, try calling both Circuit City and Best Buy and ask for
a department or manager. It is almost impossible to get through. Most
district managers required us managers to wear a cellular phone because
that was the only way to get a hold of us. They couldn't get through on
the phone lines.
