Right now the district is in the process of down-sizing, closing several of the elementry schools. A few will be remodeled and others will be closed permanently. Battle Creek has a fund equity of about 25 million dollars (the highest in the state of Michigan), and the school board has no interest in touching any of this to help appeal to possible new teachers. It would be in the best interest of the district to increase starting salaries to attract high quality teachers. There seems to be no interest in keeping teachers hired into the district. It is all about the bottom dollar. This hurts the education process and moral at the school. We are an inner city school. We need the highest quality teachers, long term, in order to best teach the students of Battle Creek. Other districts are attracting students and teachers by opening up new schools and paying more.
