Ball Aerospace builds satellites, satellite instruments and aircraft
communications devices. Boulder CO is a primarily white community with
growing asian and hispanic populations and Ball Aerospace reflects that
diversity (or lack thereof). All employees must be US citizens.
Employees have flexible work hours - Ball prefers coverage between 9-3,
but unless there are meetings scheduled, employees work 80 hours in two
weeks using a flex time schedule. Dress varies widely - but Friday is
casual and even the VPs wear jeans on Friday (unless there are customers
in town). Within the various engineering departments, there is a lot of
opportunity for advancement into lead/management position. Ball is
cognizant that a lot of engineers prefer to remain technical but they do
need to get the lead roles filled. Patience is required for technical
advancement. Engineers can request certain types of tasks (image
processing, systems engineering, PAL design), but it may be 1-2 years
before the requests can be honored. Task availability depends on what
projects are currently being worked in house and where they are in the
development process. Plant is split between Boulder and Broomfield
campuses. Broomfield handles non-space operations (e.g. aircraft, naval
operations) and large classified contracts. Boulder handles spacecraft
and space instrument development.
