BP has recently changed its interview process to encompass basically
one round of interviews. I was contacted by phone and had a brief
screening interview relating to my background and qualifications. In
addition, the position and BP was discussed. This a pretty relaxed
conversation with no tough questions. The in-person interview is
usually with 5 BP employees. Could all be at once or most likely a
team of 3 and a team of 2. The interviewers are usually the hiring
manager and other managers with some connection to your job function
and have interaction with the team you will be working in. The
interview is also somewhat relaxed and mainly you are asked behavioral
questions. The main thing to prepare is that you need to make sure you
know why you want to work for BP and the specific business unit and
also know a decnt bit about both. BP is so large that each business
unit is like its own separate company. Thus you need to show knowledge
and interest in that specific unit. In addition, really know your
resume well and be able to explain your past career path. Finally,
make sure that you are clear with your career goals at BP. The company
takes pride in the development of its employees and it expects that you
have a plan if hired. One final thing to be aware about...as I
mentioned before, each business unit has a distinct identity. If you
are applying to a job in Upstream ,then don't talk about how much you
would like to be in downstream some day. It is true that it is all the
same company but your business unit will want an employee that is
excited about long term opporunities with them.
