Company culture is polite, generous, moral and open. But in my
experience this isn't as great as it sounds, because it makes the
exceptions to these rules more disappointing. Official hours of 7.25 a
day with 25+ holidays a year and options to do 9-day fortnights,
flexitime etc are misleading. At all professional levels most people
work more like 9 hours a day and often feel they have to work at
weekends, evenings etc. Diversity is high on the list of things that
need improving - a legacy of doing a lot of urgent recruiting in the UK
and US in the 70s and 80s is that the workforce is mainly middle-aged
white men. And things are improving - in the last few years recruits
have included a roughly equal mix of men and women, and a far larger
proportion than before of other races and nationalities. The line
between encouraging diversity and discrimination is a difficult one to
follow: I have recently heard from a colleague that he felt he would
have achieved advancement by now if he hadn't been a middle-aged white
man. To be fair, though, I have heard the same from female white
colleagues in the past. There will be great opportunities for
advancement in the future as the large proportion of employees aged 40-
50 start to opt for early retirement.
