On the outside, the company appears to be holding its own. However,
rumblings persist that BJ's will be bought out by Wal-Mart. Lots of
changes in the past year within the club, including rearranging the
entire floor plan of the store three times, frustrating customers and
staff trying to locate items. Many decisions seem to come from "pencil
pushers" at Home Office; people who sit behind desks all day and don't
know how their decisions affect customers and staff. They are
expanding thier product line in Health and Beauty aids and in Berkley
and Jenson, the in-house brand, which is good, but they discontinue
items that customers come to BJ's specifically to buy. They'll carry
an item for a year and then stop suddenly, with no explanation. Also,
they insist on pusing the membership idea, but as with many areas, our
local economy is depressed, and people can't afford to pay to shop.
The discounts aren't really enough to pay to shop, etcept on gas,
books, videos, dvds, and greeting cards. Otherwise, our prices are
comparable to Wal-Mart, where you can shop for free. As a member
servises clerk, home office is constantly comparing our membership
sales numbers to another club within the chain, which has a larger,
wealthier economy to draw from. they've also come up with a second
level of membership, where you pay more to enroll, but earn money back
on what you spend. We can't even get people to sign up for the basic
membership, but they want us to sell this new level? Not in this area.
