I was able to get in to BBDO because I sent them a campaign of self-promotions,
and they
liked it. They called me up and asked me to come in with my portfolio of work.
I'd been
compiling my portfolio for about a year and a half, and was very nervous,
especially since
it was Halloween and I was wearing a short skirt and an ugly shirt -- I didn't
look too
important. But my interviewer took it with a large grain of salt, laughed at the
spec ads
that were supposed to be laughed at, and called his colleague in to see. I then
briefly met
the Chief Creative Officer, who was world-renowned for writing the 1984 ad for
Apple
Computer. A week later, my interviewer called me back and asked me if I wanted
to work
there. At the time, I worked for a podunk little agency that had no designs on
doing good
work, just getting money. It so happened that on Halloween, when I returned to
my
podunk job after interviewing at BBDO, they gave me a raise! So the salary I'd
told BBDO I
was making was now higher. I tried to use this as a bargaining chip when they
invited me
to work at BBDO, but they literally laughed at me and said no.
