At BBDO, I worked with some of the brightest, most creative people I've ever
met. We
logged a minimum of 40 hours a week there -- which is what we were paid for.
Most of
the time, I worked about 60, and my record was 84 hours in one week. A lot of
people in
their twenties work in advertising -- by age 40, most bright young stars have
had
enough. We got loopy together, we worked so much with so little sleep. The dress
code
was terrific: wear whatever you want, just be here working. My colleagues were
an
entertaining bunch, which made meetings pretty fun. The clients we presented
work to
were often irrational, poo-pooing our ideas for the most random of reasons. My
job was
to think up brillilant ideas and deliver marketing messages to consumers who
were trying
not to pay attention. It's a difficult job, in terms of having the right kind of
brain, and
happily putting in so many hours, but most of the people I worked with were able
to
translate the experience into better positions for more money.
