I think ADP is in a precarious position. They have been the dominant
player in the payroll services market. However, the internet is
providing competitive opportunities for companies that are not burdened
by ADP's huge structure and overhead. ADP had never wanted to be on
the leading edge of technology. ADP is a service company not a
technology company and this disctinction is obvious in their product
suites. Unless ADP makes a substantial cultural change, they will not
be able to compete in the internet based business world.
ADP remains committed to an old school, "good old boy" culture. This
is an anchor around their corporate neck, which if not removed, will
leave them listing at the dock while other companies sail swiftly away
with their clients.
Employee morale has declined consistently with the decline in ADP stock
value. At one time, associates joked that stock options were 'stuck
options' because they were too valuable to walk away from and therefore
the associate was stuck at ADP until the stocks vested. Now, stock
options are just a joke. The only incentive keeping most associates at
ADP is the poor economy and the lack of jobs at other companies.
ADP is a good place to work for individuals looking for a 1960's
environment, a lot of bureaucracy, low pay, long hours and disgruntled
associates.
