The culture at Autodata is a direct reflection of the thoughts and mood
of the CEO, Greg Perrier. On a whole, the culture can be described as
bipolar - you'll have the best time of your life and the worst time of
your life. Over time however, the unpredictability and emotional
rollercoaster will take a toll on everyone.
Turnover cyles from low to fair - primarily because the pay is higher
than average to retain people in the unstable environment. As the
company has grown, more senior people have left. Three VP's left
during the last three years. Each was described as God's gift while
they were at Autodata, but after they resigned they were described as
marginal employees who couldn't meet expectations (despite great things
they achieved at Autodata).
Hours range from a normal 40 hours/wk to 80+ hours/wk - depending on
demand. The two original owners/partners, Greg & Chris, drive the
hours to reflect their personal situation (both are single/divorced no
kids). Chris just follows Greg's lead, so again Greg drives every
aspect of culture, work hours, etc.
Opportunities for advancement are virtually non-existant. The belief
held by Greg is that the brightest people are always outside the
corporation - and those promotions are usually filled from outside.
The regular departure of high-performers creates regular opportunities,
just don't expect to get one.
One of the most serious flaws in culture is the questionable ethics of
the founding partners. Employees from VP down to analysts have learned
to smile and praise the regular announcements about honesty and
integrity, actions don't match the words. Employees distrust have
learned to distruct the words and motivations behind every announcement.
