Laborer First off I work for a Materials warehousing facility on a river terminal. It is a very strenuous job at times, involving much lifting and labor type work. We also use various peices of equipment from fork trucks to front end loaders. Dress code is pretty simple but mainly has to include long pants work boots with steel toes and safety soles. We utilize various PPE to include respirators, eye glasses and gloves, and at times ear protection. also since this is mostly outdoor work we need to dress according to the weather. Employment advancement opertunities is almost none existent, though the pay is not too bad. Hours of operation are Monday thru Friday, swing shifts from either 7 am to 3:30 pm or 3pm to 11:30 pm with much over time work in the form if 12 hour shifts from 3a to 3p and 3 p to 3 a also weekend work on as needed basis. More often then not we have several hundred hours of overtime per months and it is voluntary unless we do not get enough folks signed up then switches to mandatory forced overtime by senority. The work itself at times can be very dirty. Can involve working in all types of weather and involve working in lighted and darkened conditions both. We have mandatory weekely safety meetings to discuss work problems and safety issues. as well as yearly safety training for both equipment and personal safety issues such as breathing and hearing assesments.
