Alaska Airlines is probably in one of the most economically hardest hit
industries in the country, however, in that time, they have only had
very limited layoffs/cutbacks - almost all of which as been managed
through attrition. The company has a very positive attitude and is
trying to do everything possible to make the company profitable again
without having to get rid of any of its employees. In fact, it has taken
this opportunity to grow the company into markets others have pulled out
of. The entire company has a very positive attitude and everyone is
treated very well. The company doesn't work people to death and is very
big on making sure that everyone takes off for their vacation time. And
because they have a combined sick leave/holiday/vacation pay bank
account, they offer a lot of flexibility. In my first year here, I have
more vacation than some places where I worked much longer. The company
has a very diverse culture - many of those in senior positions are women
and the company also has a large percentage of people who are local
graduates and it is fairly representative of the population as a whole
in terms of race - including Alaska/Indian natives. The dress code is
relaxed - no suit and ties here and the company is in the midst of
collecting its 2nd annual survey of employees. Nearly all the senior
positions are given to people from within the company and many people
work decades here - something that is rare these days. Unlike other
companies, Alaska still has a great benefits package and a top notch
affordable health care plan.
