Alaska Airlines is in a better position that most carriers in the
business. While it is still threatened by low cost carriers like
Southwest and JetBlue, Alaska has managed to keep their operational
costs very low while providing highly recognized customer service, web
site service, and mileage programs. Labor costs will most likely be
reduced, as with other carriers, but only minor cuts are necessary to
make the company profitable again - and profits are shared with all
employees through a profit sharing plan. Alaska still has a large
marketshare in Alaska (a profitable market) and strong share along the
west coast, with growth in its transcontinental business. It is likely
to be a survivor.
