Aerospace is a pretty decent place to work, but a lot depends on the
customers for whom one is doing work. Aerospace is split into two
distinct conceptual domains: engineering/consulting and program
management. Usually, one starts on the eng/consult and migrates over to
program management. There is a lot of focus on keeping technical skills
up-to-date. For researchers, incentive exists to attend technical
conferences to keep abreast of changes in one's field. The one downside
of working for Aerospace is the customer and the customer's focus on
their specific problems: their problems never seem to get solved
completely and one faces recurring technical problems ("Didn't we solve
that for another program?") The challenge for the engineer is to steer
clear of program management politics, not hard to do, but like any
consultant, one's conclusions are often colored by customer expectations.
