I have spent more than 20 years at Accenture and would not want to miss
a single minute - with a few exceptions.
It was and still is a meritocracy - if you are very good at what you are
doing you will be promoted and receive decent raises. If you are average
or just good - you will struggle sooner or later. In mainline consulting
it still is up or out.
You always know where you stand - the career counselling process works
most of the time and provides honest feedback. People know what's
expected and what the rating criteria are.
The climate has become more demanding after the IPO and the general
consulting slump. Even junior people need to be excellent in client
relationship building. Long hours are expected from everybody and the
most hours are worked by senior people. Expect partners to run a copy
machine at 3 a.m. if junior employees are busy polishing the last slides
and that proposal has to be finished by morning.
As long as you succeed there are not many rules that can't be bent - as
long as it's not unethical towards a client or the company.
