Abbott is a behemoth of a company, so if you don't like large
corporations, stay away. It's also very siloed; you could sit next to
someone for a year and not know what she does or even what her
department does.
Abbott frequently wins "best company to work for" awards, and really
does have a strong commitment to work/life balance and diversity. In a
tumultuous world, Abbott is one of the last bastions of stability, and
most employees have been here for years. While some insularity results,
Abbott people do not summarily reject outside thinking, and are
generally welcoming of newcomers.
Abbott is very paternalistic, providing myriad benefits that you just
don't hear about anywhere else these days (e.g., reimbursing interview
candidates for their car travel!). Insurance, profit-sharing, and stock
option plans are all very generous.
Because Abbott people tend to stay at Abbott, they usually have plenty
of opportunities to move up and around the corporation. It's common to
work with people who have done tours of duty with multiple divisions
(domestic as well as international). Jobs are always posted internally
before being recruited for externally.
