I've worked in 6 positions at Abbott since I started here in July 2001.
I was a member of the FPDP program, which offered 4-6 month rotations
for participants in Financial areas of the company. Through those
rotations, I've seen the good and the bad at Abbott. So far, I've
worked for a couple of people who know nothing. They don't know how to
do their jobs and they don't know how to do the job that I was (am)
assigned to do. That can be an issue here. I've watched people who
don't deserve to be managers scooped up into offices rather than
elevating those who have been working in a department for 5 years.
I've also worked for great managers, whose goals are to be sure that the
employees understand and can add value to their positions. I hate to
say it, but that is kind of rare in this company.
I currently work in one of the divisions of the company that hasn't been
doing so well since they had problems with the FDA. I work crazy hours
here. I've been at the office every weekend since 2004 started.
Sometimes my boss is here. Sometimes he isn't.
The dress code is not strict. I wear jeans at least once a week. I
believe the corporate culture is finally moving into the 21st century.
If we don't deal with customers or the press, why would we have to wear
suits? Things are changing for the better slowly, but surely at this
company. It's the younger employees that are requesting change and I
hope we don't conform too much.
