At the time I joined ATI Enginering they were the 70th fastest growing
firms in the SF Bay Area. They had a good mix of A/E business as both a
home design firm and general engineering consulting specifically for the
support of design and construction. They were willing to seek out new
business and had several long term clients that contributed to the
revenue stream on a continous basis. That was the good news....
The bad news was that several administrative procedures and controls
were typical for a small, closely held and managed firm. Yet at 50 or
more employees, it was no longer a closely managed firm and standard
procedural issues not being employed meant that catch as catch can
measurement and monitoring controls were in place. This also turned
into power plays with subterfuge and perceptions having way too much
influence over reality of actual work productivity and responsibility.
The overall results were a very high turnover, a poor retention of top
talented people and little likelihood of internal development of
professional skills as employees were more likely to expend energy in
getting the work out or protecting their behinds than to make it a
better, more efficient work place.
Good place for power mongers and those than can carve out a niche for
themselves and an entourage. Poor place for professionals trying to
hone their skills and learn good management and professional skills.
