Well, it's been a great gig. But as of about midnight last night, we
got bought by Cingular Wireless. The optimistic view is that the next
few months are going to be exciting. OK... so incoming artillery rounds
are exciting. The problem is that incoming rounds can also be fatal.
Over the next two years Cingular and AT&T Wireless are going to merge
operations. Piece by piece, bit by bit, the two companies will shed
around 15,000 jobs or 25-30% of their work force made redundant by the
acquisition. As Bugs Bunny says, "Yipes!"
So what's the corporate culture like? Hey... It's the phone company.
As the company gets bigger it looks more and more like a utility -- not
a high tech growth company. As one manager said as he headed out the
door (forever), "It just isn't any fun any more." Sad, but that's the
way a lot of people seem to feel. And there will be fewer and fewer of
us to feel that way.
All in all... There's no growth; there's little advancement; there's
lots of stress; there's tremendous uncertainty. There are probably much
easier ways to earn a living.
