Manager ADVO, Inc. is a well-known direct-mail company, striving to double its revenue to $2 billion annually within the next five years. The company is the U. S. Postal Service's largest customer, with billions of its pieces of mail delivered to homes every year. It is best-known for its "Have You Seen Me?" cards, highlighting missing and abducted children. To date, the program has lead to the recovery of 130 children. The company features numerous sales and customer service locations nationwide and three print hubs, located in Pittsburgh, PA, Milwaukee, WI and Phoenix, AZ. Its corporate headquarters are located in Windsor, CT. The staff is somewhat monocultural, perhaps a reflection of its location, a fairly homogenous northeastern city. There are members of the staff representing several ethnic groups, but none of the groups are represented by more than two or three staff members. Dress code is business casual, with Fridays as casual days for all office staff, except sales. Employee hours are determined by the daily deadlines necessary to ensure that print jobs reach printers in a timely fashion. Most of the employees work daylight hours, with some graphic artists and quality control artists working a swing shift which ends at 2 a.m. These employees are allowed to dress casually full-time, as they are the only employees in the office during their shift. Graphics Print employees share workspaces between shifts, which causes some friction as dayshift members have decorated their workspaces to their liking, while night shift members have no opportunity for personalizing their workspace. Besides the 50 or so "white collar" positions, the location also has 30-35 production employees, most of whom are employed by local temporary firms. ADVO's recruitment package features a well-designed career ladder, which HR stresses as being an important retention tool. No employee advancement has taken place for any of the employees in the department since my hiring. The management of the department is very receptive of requests for advancement, but it remains to be seen whether management will take steps to ensure the advancement takes place.
