From an aesthetic standpoint, 84 Lumber provides and unpleasant
workplace, from the lack of heat and/or air conditioning to combat the
elements to the general filth of the yards themselves. From a work
standpoint, the environment at 84 Lumber is fantastic. There is
typically a personable group of employees at each store, and the
customer base is typically very understanding and sympathetic towards
the lack of creature comforts, as the majority are contractors who
endure the same conditions on a daily basis. The employee base is very
homogeneous, typically bein gmale s between the ages of 22 and 40. The
nature of the work, being physical and often uncomfortable, perhaps
dictates the makeup of the staff, but there could be a greater attempt
at diversity as a whole. The typical workweek is 48-55 hours, with
overtime pay being provided. The uniforms are far from that of the
corporate world, with empoyees being dressed in work oriented clothing,
including shorts in the summer and steel toed work boots. There is a
great opportunity to succeed for those willing to play the corporate
game. As I stated earlier, the homogeneous employee population extends
well into upper management. If you don't fit their mold, you cannot
advance in the company. If the corporate image was one of integrity,
this might not be as much of a problem. Unfortunately, this is not the
case. However the pay scale increases dramatically with each promotion,
and financial stability is available through profit sharing and 401k to
those who stay long enough.
