Master of Accounting Program (online)

5.0 of 5 stars

September 2015 | CURRENT STUDENT

Uppers

Great faculty and students; challenging program (in an edifying way)

Downers

With the challenge comes a heavy work load; be prepared to spend several late nights doing work

Comments

Great opportunity for online program. I am an online student, and I have found that educational and employment opportunities are equivalent to on campus version to the program. Offers great flexibility; consider it if you are switching careers or already have roots in a city outside of Chapel Hill.

The faculty are outstanding with excellent pedigrees and training. Classes are a mix of lecture and case study, depending on the subject matter. Kenan-Flagler is particularly in sustainable enterprise with many unique course offerings.

Admissions

The admissions process consists of a standard application including GMAT, undergrad and work experience. In addition, candidates are interviewed and provide application essays, of which the questions were the most unique of all the schools I applied to.

Academics

The professors are fabulous. Well prepared and well credentialed, and very accessible. The core provides a great experience and is well coordinated. Also, have the opportunity to take electives early in the experience.

Quality of Life

Carolina is great, the facilities are nice, the weather is pleasant and the town is fun and accessible.

Admissions

The admissions process is defined by its unique ability to allow students to get to know the school. Campus visits allow for a chance to attend class, lunch with students, visit with students, and interview. I was able to understand the personality of the school at UNC Kenan-Flagler more than any of the other schools I visited.

Academics

The school has a well coordinated balance of case learning, academic journal study, experiential learning, global immersion study/study abroad, and independent study work. The school has a domestic and global consulting program with leading companies in a large variety of industries. The school has a research institute (Kenan Institute) on site that publishes innovative new studies. Faculty are consistently among the best in the world and the most cutting edge. The school has been a pioneer in teamwork, leadership, and sustainable enterprise theory and practice.

Quality of Life

The on campus housing for graduate students is brand new and extraordinary. The quality of life is outstanding. For example: sports- The University of North Carolina is one of only two universities to ever win the Director's Cup (along with Stanford) as the nation's top collegiate athletics program. Chapel Hill is safe, with many happy enterprenuerial students. It has been called the Southern part of Heaven.

Admissions

The school now only interviews on an invitation basis. The application essays are somewhat longer as compared to applications for other schools in order to better identify students with the determination to contribute to the growth of the program and fit with the collaborative and high performance culture.

Academics

The quality of the classes are exceptional due the the breath of experiences that my classmates have across many industries including investment banking, consulting, marketing, operations, strategy, consulting and energy/power. It varies depending on your concentration, but on average, 65% is Case Study driven and the remainder is class discussion, group discussion and group projects. There are several research opportunities where you can partner with professors at the busy school and at other school at UNC. There are over 50 Exchange programs with the most prestigious business, economic and management school in the world and each quarter, many of them come to Kenan-Flagler which is a great experience.

Unlike other Top 15 schools, Kenan-Flagler MBAs are very competitive but not at each others expense. That is the Kenan-Flagler difference and it is that loyalty and support that makes the students very successful.

There are also many speakers from corporations that come to speak to the students from a variety of industries that really puts a real touch to the material that we are learning in class.

Quality of Life

The cost of living is great - this is a big plus considering the program cost and opportunity cost of getting an MBA.

Facilities, library and computer labs are the state of the art.

Dining is great with a southern flair.

Community relations is excellent.

I have never been happier. A great place to live with a driven group of people who will continue to reshape business.

Admissions

The admissions process was very selective where they looked beyond your professional experience and test scores but weighted your drive for performance, drive for excellence, agility to handle multiple working environments, analytical strength, competitive drive and breath of global experiences.

The low cost of living in Chapel Hill is extremely helpful when trying to keep the student loan amount at a minimum. Chapel Hill has a quaint small-town feel, yet provides everything needed.
