Hofstra Law

4.0 of 5 stars

May 2017 | FORMER STUDENT

Uppers

Professors are very qualified. Most are Ivy League educated, and some (e.g. Eric Freedman) have testified before more than half of state legislatures on many issues (in Prof. Freedman's case on the death penalty).

Downers

The distance from New York city. The school really sells itself as being close to NYC-20 minutes away. It's more like an hour. The only way you're getting to the city from Hofstra in 20 minutes is in a helicopter.

Comments

If you are from out of state, especially parts of the South, they will give generous scholarships. I took advantage of this, and I encourage you to consider NY if you've never been.

Good school but some things to keep in mind

Uppers

Really good professors who want to help you learn and become a successful attorney.

Downers

Reputation makes it hard to get jobs in big law unless you are at the very top of the class.

Comments

Parking is difficult unless you get there at 8am, but is free.

Good professors and courses but limited career opportunities

Uppers

Professors are interesting and some are very renowned in their area.

Downers

The staff are sometimes not so helpful. Limited career opportunities.

Comments

Go if you receive a substantial scholarship. But you have to achieve good 1L grades to keep it.

Academics

The faculty make a real effort to translate the theory into actual practice as part of their instruction, but also there are opportunities to work in the clinic, research lab, externships and take trial techniques courses and professional success boot camps.

Quality of Life

Having a full University campus makes for a great place to study, exercise, socialize, learn and did I mention STUDY!

Admissions

Essays, interview, LSAT and plenty of conversations with Admissions staff.

Academics

Classes can be large, but they do break us down into at least 1 small section class. There are all kinds of opportunities to get involved. There are always going to be 'gunners' in every class, but for the most part, everyone is very friendly and willing to help out.

Quality of Life

Some of the rooms are a bit shabby, and others are recently renovated and nice. Moot courtroom is nice. Lack of decent food options on campus though, and the prices are unreasonable considering you can walk off campus and pick up a better lunch for half the price.

Admissions

Pretty straightforward application process. Great scholarship opportunities. Many people seem to have some sort of financial aid or scholarship package.

Academics

Amazing faculty that take great pains to reach out to students by holding open office hours or even having additional 1-2 hour drop in sessions on a weekly basis in order to clarify material covered at lecture.

Quality of Life

Graduate Hall is new, clean, and has consistent necessary services.

Good mix of practical and theory. Socratic methos is sporadic. Grading on a curve.

Academics

Hofstra offers tons of opportunities for those who seek them out!

Quality of Life

The campus is beautiful in the spring and flowers are blooming everywhere. Food on campus isn't bad. Hofstra is also in the process of renovating the basement of the law school over the summer.

Admissions

Hofstra offers a lot of scholarship opportunities for students who have a high undergraduate GPA and who score well on the LSAT. The financial aid office is also very help.

Academics

Classes are challenging, with the better professors focusing on socratic method and engaging the class. Much of the curriculum focuses on academic theory, especially in the Constitutional/Civil Rights realm. Adjuncts provide much needed practical perspective.

Quality of Life

Cost of living is astronomical, including campus food and supplies. Facilities are average. The library is chock full of excellent material if you know where to look. It seems like something is always broken in the computer labs that make them a pain to use.

Admissions

Seems like they take many factors into account, primarily economic and racial diversity.

Academics

Socratic in most classes. Advising is a bit hit or miss. Relatively congenial atmosphere amongst students.

Admissions

Don't remember that specific about the application process which distinguished it from other schools.
