Excellent internship experience

5.0 of 5 stars

Ny, NY | December 2015 | FORMER INTERN

Uppers

Extremely positive attitude of staff, strong desire to engage interns in ongoing work, events and outings where summer analysts and associates got to mingle

Downers

Sometimes lacked a little bit of structure: there were a few times it seemed internship was being done on the fly

Comments

A very solid company and a great experience top to bottom: superior to the experiences offered by the bulge brackets

Houlihan Lokey Summer Analyst - Great People, Great Work, Great Place To Be

5.0 of 5 stars

New York, NY | 2015 | VERIFIED INTERN

Uppers

Overall the people who work at Houlihan are amazing. Not only do the individual teams work well, but all of the groups work well together. The firm promotes unity through all of its divisions and it helps everyone immensely.

Downers

I would add some more powerpoint and excel training in the beginning of the internship.

Advice to Potential Interns

The best organization to work at is one with the best people and culture. Houlihan has an amazing group of people as well as amazing deals and deal-flow

Advice to Management

For the summer analysts program, if I could change anything, it would be some aspects of the training week. Some of the time we spent was on how to utilize different research tools such as Bloomberg, CapIQ, and Thomson, although a lot of that information can be learned "on the job." I think some of that time can be better used by teaching more PowerPoint and Excel skills.

Sample Interview Questions

Can you please tell me a little bit about yourself; Why do you want to be an investment banker; Why do you want to work at Hpulihan Lokey; What have your previous summer experiences been like.

My team was amazing. Such a positive, creative, intelligent group.
Cynthia Bush's, the Director of Recruiting, guidance really led me to receiving a full-time offer and I am very grateful. Her energy, support and dedication is a very differentiating factor.

Downers

Initially and even in the middle of the summer, I was worried about speaking up. Not because of my group's actions but my own impression of what I was supposed to be like.

Advice to Potential Interns

Look at the people and what you really will be doing. Look at the trajectory of the firm.

Lots of responsibility, great experiences

4.8 of 5 stars

New York, NY | 2015 | VERIFIED INTERN

Uppers

- Fellow interns were great to work with
- Once I showed I could handle more responsibility, I was given it
- Work life balance was great
- Compensation was great

Downers

- Had to work long hours at some points
- There were times when there wasn't much for me to do
- Air conditioning would shut off in the evenings

Advice to Potential Interns

- This company gives you a great opportunity to gain valuable experience
- You will interact with senior employees a great deal
- The people are great

Advice to Management

While it is understandable that there might not always be a consistent work flow for interns, more focused projects to provide them with necessary and valuable experience would be very helpful. The final project we did this year was a great step in that direction.

5.0 of 5 stars

New York, NY | 2013 | VERIFIED INTERN

Uppers

best aspects are the people are very friendly, the MDs are very understanding of your schedule and the analysts are helping you to become better

Downers

unpredictability of what projects you are going to be staffed on and the little control of the projects you are working on and the quickly changing timeline of the projects themselves

Advice to Potential Interns

i think coming into the summer, your interest in the actual field is really important. restructuring is specialized and if you don't have interest, you won't really understand the tasks. given that a candidate has interest in finance and restructuring, houlihan is the best place to be. Always plentiful deal flows and you will learn very specialized technical knowledge you won't get anywhere else

Advice to Management

based on our internship class, continuing to work on diversity

The best culture on Wall Street

5.0 of 5 stars

New York, NY | 2013 | VERIFIED INTERN

Working in the investment banking division I found that the hours at this firm were amazing! It is all about getting quality work done and then going home. I loved the intern events that we had. We went to rooftop bars every two weeks, played golf, went bowling as group, and had an amazing party at the group head's house.

Downers

There wasn't much not too like at Houlihan Lokey. There could be a more formal mentoring process.

Advice to Potential Interns

Culture is the most important aspect to think about when picking a bank. If you feel that you fit well within a bank, then that is the bank that you should pick. Houlihan Lokey prides itself in having the best culture and consistently ranks at the top in Vault's rankings. Another important aspect to look at is deal flow. Being one of the top restructuring shops in the world, Houlihan Lokey works on some of the largest deals.

Learned a great deal about restructuring, deal execution and people management (last was to some degree)

Downers

our school ends late so while houlihan has a training program for everyone, i wish i could have started with everyone else

Advice to Potential Interns

houlihan runs a transparent process and they really are what they say

Advice to Management

Chicago booth can start early with everyone else even though the school says you can't

Enormous amount of responsibility

5.0 of 5 stars

New York, NY | 2013 | VERIFIED INTERN

Uppers

The trust that senior bankers give you off the back, an opportunity to prove yourself, opportunity to function as a real-time analyst by half way through the internship

Downers

the administrative responsibilities but that is part of every position anywhere

takes the right type of person to take the level of responsibility given and for some, it can be overwhelming

Advice to Potential Interns

this places takes a special kind of person to be a jack-of-all trades. (modelling, technical skills that you learn in school to the more basic tasks that you have to do to keep a deal moving

Advice to Management

hours ebbs and flows like any bank and not particularly bad

comp - depends on group - restructuring on par and competitive, cf is a little lower but competitive
