Great experience in investment banking in terms of both deal experience and workplace culture

4.8 of 5 stars

New York, NY | 2015 | VERIFIED INTERN

Uppers

Great, respectful firm culture where people at all levels seem legitimately happy to be working there; opportunity to work on live deals; no face time; training led by members of the firm to ensure you learn the most useful skills for the internship and are able to hit the ground running when you start

Downers

It's investment banking so the hours can be intense, but Evercore does seem to encourage a positive work-life balance, particularly compared to other firms in the industry

Advice to Potential Interns

Perfect for people looking for interesting/technical deal experience and a positive firm culture that is extremely rare in investment banking; may not be for people who are concerned about brand recognition outside of the finance industry (Evercore has a very strong brand within Finance but still isn't a household name), or for those interested in starting in an international office

Would You Recommend

Yes

The best place to start a career in finance.

The people are all very nice, life style was good (for investment banking), many opportunities to work on good projects.

Downers

Often times there was not enough work.

Advice to Potential Interns

If you are interested in investment banking, consider working at an independent advisory bank instead of a bulge bracket. Much better in every conceivable way if the firm brings in decent deal flow.

Advice to Management

The technology group is a terrible group to work for. Literally the worst professional experience I have ever had.

An incredible learning experience that will prepare you to succeed in finance and beyond

Uppers

Excellent teaching, beautiful facilities, reasonable hours, excellent pay, playing softball in central park as a firm and going white water rafting as a firm.

Downers

Sometimes I felt that I had real responsibility to the team which was both sometimes frightening but also great learning experiences

Advice to Potential Interns

Make sure to review your excel hotkeys, financial accounting, accretion/dilution models and other technical skills etc., because as a summer analyst and analyst, you will need to command the fundamentals before learning the details, and it always makes for the best experience if you come in to the summer internship having covered all the technical bases first, so you can not only see them a second time, but gain a deeper understanding of not only how things are done, but why.

Advice to Management

As far as I can tell, everything was about as good as possible.

Evercore is probably the best choice if you would like get experience in M&A with nice people and also get paid substantially better than other Wall Street firms. Evercore summer training is very intensive and therefore rewarding.
