Best investment banking/finance internship

5.0 of 5 stars

New York, NY | 2015 | VERIFIED INTERN

Uppers

Having a work setting that allowed bonding with other interns (interns were grouped together, whereas at other firms interns are scattered among full time workers); having amazing firm-wide events (white water rafting, softball tournament, countryclub/beach/golfing events, etc); having a very understanding and reasonable work culture that focuses on balancing lifestyle while still outputting good effort

Downers

No complaints

Advice to Potential Interns

Look beyond brand name and ask people how their experiences were. I knew Evercore for its great brand name and reputation among investment banks and that was the primary reason why I chose it. I did not know about its incredible culture, social events, intern bonding events, and higher compensation before I started... these are all huge factors to consider beyond just its brand names.

Advice to Management

While Evercore is expanding, to make sure to keep its current culture and events, which may become harder to keep in a larger firm since it will be less cohesive just by virtue of its size.

Sample Interview Questions

Fit qualitative questions, why investment banking, basic technicals (depreciation, DCF valuation), advanced technicals (DTL/DTAs, half year convention)

Uppers

Exposure to live deals
Mentorship from junior and senior bankers

Unavoidable in this industry, but periods of nothing followed by periods of sprinting.

Banking in a prestigious firm where you matter

4.9 of 5 stars

New York, NY | 2015 | VERIFIED INTERN

Uppers

A good balance of projects, socializing with peers and other members of the firm (incl. a women's poker night to learn the game of poker and its tie-in to the corporate world and overall business skills), and learning about the firm's vision and culture (group lunch and town hall with senior management and one-on-one with mentors and buddies).

Downers

It'd be great to meet more people from different groups. When deciding about FT offers, some MBA students think about their potential fit with groups (to be placed into after one year of working in the generalist program).

Advice to Potential Interns

Get examples of how strategic past intern projects have been and how inclusive the firm is with interns. E.g., EVR interns were invited to join the FT professionals in the monthly professional development seminar.

Uppers

- The people and culture
- The growth of the firm
- The fun events and activities that were planned
- The personal development of skills that occur throughout the summer

Downers

As a generalist, sometimes you get pulled in a few different directions; however, all it takes is a few phone calls and the multiple teams you are on will figure out how to prioritize your work.

Advice to Potential Interns

There is no better place to work as a summer analyst for an investment bank. You will learn a great deal and also have a lot of fun.
