Great place to work and even better colleagues

5.0 of 5 stars

March 2016 | FORMER EMPLOYEE

Uppers

Colleagues are brilliant and down-to-earth at the same time. People who are narcissistic or have a big ego are not cultural fits at Oliver Wyman and are generally counseled out. The atmosphere is collegial with frequent happy hours and firm activities driven by either office location or industry vertical. Leadership opportunities are plentiful and career trajectory is truly merit based. You also have the opportunity to align yourself earlier to a specific industry focus area if you are passionate about certain subject matter.

Downers

The Financial Services group has historically been run differently than other industry groups. Recent attempts to integrate FS with the other groups led to some cultural and process issues but will be a net benefit for the firm long-term.
Brand recognition is inconsistent when interacting with non-consulting folks - this makes recruiting and networking sometimes more difficult.
While ample exit opportunities exist through constant calls from head hunters, the post-consulting support and placement services does not exist at OW like it does at McKinsey.
Due to not requiring an MBA for career advancement, there is sometimes a sense that employees that joined after undergrad and have come up through the ranks are fast-tracked to Partner vs. post-MBA hires. Post-MBA hire integration is evolving but there is much more of a "sink-or-swim" mentality for these employees. This does, however, offer an opportunity to distinguish oneself if you are able to quickly ramp up and provide value to your teams.

Comments

In addition to being a cultural fit, you need to be highly analytical and structured in the way you think. OW differentiates itself from other top-tier management consulting firms by providing action-oriented recommendations to clients, not just a qualitative high-level frameworks.

Work-life balance is project and industry specific. My experience was that work was intense and had quick turn around times for deliverables. People hold themselves to a high-standard at the firm and leadership generally leads by example.

The people were all smart but didn't take themselves too seriously

Downers

Brand could be inconsistent across campuses; e.g. huge name at Dartmouth, almost none at Stanford

Comments

If you are interested in consulting, well worth strongly considering OW

People I worked with were smart, friendly, and ambitious.
Social events were frequent and fun.
Quickly growing firm, catching up ground with the top 3 consulting firms

Downers

Even though I consider Oliver Wyman to be a top player, it doesn't have the same brand recognition as other consulting firms.

Comments

Selective interview process
Hard numerical tests
Internship frequently leads to a job

Excellent culture, compensation, and travel opportunities.
Perfect for finance, but still present in other industries

Downers

The hours are definitely rough, but definitely not out of what you would be expecting for consulting firms.

Comments

Network, make sure you're good at math, and practice a ton of case. Be at least slightly interested in FS given that's their largest sector.

Challenging, interesting content with wonderful colleagues!
