Current Consultant - Strategy& New York

March 2015 | CURRENT EMPLOYEE

Perfect blend of prestigious management consulting ethos and an entrepreneurial work culture for employees.
Environment strongly favors initiative and meritocracy with ample opportunity for those looking to advance.
Strong mentorship culture with colleagues and senior staff taking a keen interest in junior staff.development and advancement
A plethora of new opportunities to serve several new Fortune 500 clients as a result of relationships brought in by PwC post merger.

Downers

Integration of firm cultures with PwC will take time and the difference in talent especially at junior levels can impact work dynamic in jointly staffed teams.
The reputation of Booz & Company has unfortunately, and perhaps unfairly taken a bit of a hit despite the successful acquisition of prestigious new clients post merger and overall firm growth.

Comments

Strategy& is a fantastic place for smart, entrepreneurial people looking to learn a lot and get their hands dirty. Not only do junior staff have the opportunity to learn the invaluable consulting soft skills - the Strategy& alignment model allows client staff to build in-depth industry knowledge by working primarily in a specific practice (e.g. Financial Services, Healthcare, Consumer & Retail etc) - which allows for better exit opportunities into industry.
While the merger with PwC and funky new branding may raise a few eyebrows from the outside - the firm has done very well to position itself for success with strong growth, investment in retaining and acquiring new talent (Including partners from rival firms) and building client relationships with a number of legacy PwC clients. The wins have definitely outweighed the losses and at least for now - 'Strategy&' looks like an exciting new step for what was once Booz.

Practical solutions. client centric and respect for the individual

Downers

Did not have enough scale (which has changed with recent merger with PwC)

Comments

With the recent merger with PwC there are even more opportunities to learn and grow across a wide set of sectors and clients; also ability to take projects from strategy creation to execution - great time to be at Strategy & (formerly Booz & Co)

Most flexible of the blue chip strategy firms; genuine respect for people

Downers

Scale relative to McK and BCG---Booz lost scale irrecoverably with the split between Booz & Co. and Booz Allen Hamilton

Comments

Consulting is not an easy industry

Strategy services is harder

Top tier strategy services is harder still

Consider Booz only of if you really like to be challenged; if you want to end every day feeling as though you were pushed and came out better for it.

Development challenges - never a boring day.

Downers

The intensity is hard to keep up with - takes a toll on the family.

Comments

Need to have a lot of passion for client service. We will figure out if you have the analytical firepower and the personality to work with our clients. But only you can figure out the passion that you bring to client service. It is a very intense, emotionally and intellectually challenging environment and very hard to sustain the required performance if you are not absolutely passionate about getting to the best outcome for your clients. You will be working along side very passionate and committed leaders and peers, it will be very hard to keep up if you are not excited about solving tough business challenges and working with clients to get results. You have to want to do this so much that you would do it in your free time; otherwise you won't succeed, there will be too many people that are more passionate and more driven and that will show very quickly.

Comments

If you want to grow, this is the right place. But it's not an easy place - you need to be able to take feedback, deal with uncertainty, and above all, be prepared for some projects with good hour and some projects with long hours. You'll need endurance.
