Flexibility. Lack of administrative time wasters. Generous compensation. Very relaxed office culture.

Basic corporate functions (IT, HR, etc.) are weak. Lack of name recognition in the market compared to Big Four. Offices and practices operate as silos.

Not everything has been developed for new practice areas so a lot of time is spent building the infrastructure.

One must be in the frame of mind to be a 'consultant'. I believe someone out of university is simply not capable of knowing if they could be successful in this type environment. One must have experience in something otherwise the knowledge base is shallow. At A&M, the knowledge base is simply the top of the game. People here have 'been there, done that, and can help other companies and divisions develop their infrastructures without making anyone feel uncomfortable or weary of consultants. This is not easy, this is not glamorous but it is challenging, rewarding most of the time, and you do make or break your own reputation.

Do not be afraid to ask pointed questions about what a person does in an interview.

Ensure that you want to dedicate your life to tax before working here. Don't pick an employer just because they do consulting or something that sounds purposeful; pick based on the substance of what they do, day-in and day-out.
