Hours and social events

Downers

Standards/expectations are sometimes so high that it can be stressful to meet

Comments

My perspective of public accounting was based on what professionals relayed during Accounting Society meetings. As such, I was expecting to work 80-100 hour weeks with no fun at all. My original plan was to put in my hours to get licensed and then look for another job as soon as possible. When I went through my first busy season, I wa surprised. I only worked more than 55 hours once and still I worked 20 hours less than the 80-hour-expectation. On the weekends, the firm provides lunch and massages. After busy season, they treat us to a weekend getaway in Palm Springs. The work is challenging but rewarding. Now I see public accounting as a long-term career, not just a job to get licensed.

Partner/Principal in Tax
Bellingham, WA | 2013 | VERIFIED EMPLOYEE

Great people. Flexibility. Interesting clients. Excellent leadership. Very collegial office culture.

Downers

As with any large firm, it's important to have consistencies in procedures, policies, etc. This creates more administrative burdens and overhead costs than you would have at a small firm. These centralized policies and procedures can create inefficiencies, but large firms must do this to be successful and to function as a cohesive unit.
