In the spring of 2007, Vault surveyed 999 investment and commercial banking professionals, asking them to rate employers in the banking industry in terms of how prestigious it is to work for them. Vault's prestige rankings are based on these scores.

Vault also asked bankers to rate employers in areas such as training, hours, compensation and overall satisfaction. These scores were used to calculate Vault's quality of life and diversity Top 10 rankings.
