Market research is still an essential part of business information. Regardless of how much free information is on the Internet, there still aren't a lot of sources of collected information that is sound and grounded. I've heard that working in the outfits like Gartner can be taxing because of the relatively lower pay scale and thee cliques and the politics. However, it is a GREAT way to learn, and it will provide incredible networking opportunities for better future jobs.
Alternatively, consider working for ZDNet or any of the other technology publishing firms and publications. You might not get the same kind of market research experience you seek, but it's still a good broad overview.
Another alternative is to work in an Internet company's marketing department or any company's marketing department where the company is conducting has some sort of e-business.
Good luck!
