In Reply To: I just got promoted to a VP at my company and my boss (CEO) called me in for some management advice. He said to me "people work harder when they know they are being watched". He was criticizing my "loose style" of managing my employees. I want to measure performance based on milestones and work product, whereas my CEO has always been the "push, push, push harder" type of boss. Most employees fear the CEO so I wanted to change the way I managed my group and act as a "shit filter". Does anyone have any advice on how to counter the CEO's philosophy? Specifically, I'd like any info on any MBA studies about workplace productivity, etc. I want to put out incentive-based compensation with measurable milestones in improve productivity. I'm sure my CEO went to business school in the 30-35 years ago where the first day they probably pounded that totalitarian attitude into his head. Looking for any hard data I can get my hands on. Thanks, FP
Message: It is not easy, but you will need to do your homework and I think that some studies were done on this subject. Yuo might try speaking to someone over at Challenger Gray and Christmas, an employment and outplacement firm. Also ask your former B-school professors for some advice and help. Its only people like you that will liberate the offices that have Sadam Hussein as the CEO from their tyrranical grasp. Good luck.
