In Reply To: One of my family members had been working at a bank for the past 2 years. About a year ago, after a re-org, he found himself working for this 27 year old manager with whom he did not get along. Although his clients loved him, she decided that she didn't like him and would get rid of him. After one minor incident (involving a client misunderstanding, which the client took ultimate resposibility for), she filed formal charges with the HR dept, and had him put on probation. At the same time he retained a lawyer, just in case. Recently, at his annual review, his probation was extended, and his top reviews from a year ago were now at the other extreme, with comments from the HR complaint copied/pasted into the review. Today, he was laid off by the company for 'budget reasons' with a crappy severance package. He has testimony from other colleagues and clients that he was doing an exceptional job, and i think he has good grounds to sue. Even if he doesn't i think it's ridiculous that this one manager can taint his record (making it difficult to find a new job). Has anyone had this kind of experience? Advice? Outcomes?
Message: I was working at a company for 8 years, when the company hired a new young manager, a chinese immigrant with PhD. He dislikeked me from the very first the moment. To prove my inability to do my job, he kept me isolated from all meetings. Assignments were unclear, and frequently a nonsense. Dispite of my PhD, over thirty years of experience, 4 patents concieved for the company, two company rewords for exeptional contribution, my name engraved at the company lobby, and continuos excelent evaluation by previous manager, he immidiatelly downgraded my performance to marginal, claiming I do not attend meetings because I am not interested in his departments' work, and put me on probation. When I complained to VP, the VP told me he had absolute trust in his managers, and he could not do anything for me. Less than two years later, when I was close to my 59th birthday, he fired me, and hired another young immigrant with PhD who took over my job. I filed a complain with the state EOC. A black officer was assigned to my case. Well, I lost, I am white! EOC found my complain without a merrit. My former colleques were so scared, they refused to testify. One of them said: "If such a nasty thing happend to you, I could be the next one". My advice: Leave as soon as you can.
