In Reply To: One of my family members had been working at a bank for the past 2 years. About a year ago, after a re-org, he found himself working for this 27 year old manager with whom he did not get along. Although his clients loved him, she decided that she didn't like him and would get rid of him. After one minor incident (involving a client misunderstanding, which the client took ultimate resposibility for), she filed formal charges with the HR dept, and had him put on probation. At the same time he retained a lawyer, just in case. Recently, at his annual review, his probation was extended, and his top reviews from a year ago were now at the other extreme, with comments from the HR complaint copied/pasted into the review. Today, he was laid off by the company for 'budget reasons' with a crappy severance package. He has testimony from other colleagues and clients that he was doing an exceptional job, and i think he has good grounds to sue. Even if he doesn't i think it's ridiculous that this one manager can taint his record (making it difficult to find a new job). Has anyone had this kind of experience? Advice? Outcomes?
Message: My heart felt sympathy to you and your family member! I know what this is all about for it has happened to me, and I also have a friend who has had this happen to her too.(It's not uncommon). And it can take quite awhile to get other work in the same field. My friend ended up getting other jobs that were in a different field before being able to get back to her chosen career. With me, I managed to make my own way in self employment, and if I ever needed a reference I would get it from a past supervisor and/or a collegue who I had worked with. I would make sure that he gets some of his collegues to give him a reference and any past supervisor that he has had, and if he has any past performance reviews make sure that he gets a photo copy of each of them. It is a digusting thing that one individual can get away with doing this to another! I would try to work around this nut of a manager, and see if I could get a reference from someone else in authority there. If this is absolutely not possible then I would REALLY FIGHT IT for as much FINANCIAL compensation that I could get because it may take awhile to recover from this and be able to land another job within the same field. Don't let this nut destroy your future and your career! Go around her or over top of her for a reference from someone else!. Most likely this manager will NOT be there for very long, because what goes around eventually comes around! Mark my words her days there are NUMBERED.... both me and also my friend's experiences have proved it to be true!
