I work in a large corporation. Though my marketing department is large, my specific function has only 2 people in it - a director and myself. She and I interact well, though she assumes a great deal of control over every project and rarely is willing to loosen the reigns. At the same time, what she says I can take on (whatever I want) is very different from what she is willing to let me do in practice. How do I confront and resolve this effectively? I've had several meetings with her regarding my goals and though she is responsive in the meetings, the application is far from what is promised. Any Advise would be immensely appreciated. |

Ms.G,
When I read your message, I couldn't believe this was written by another person other than myself! Although I'm in marketing communications, I have been in an identical situation for two years. My recommendation? Move on and make a fresh start. It's what I'm preparing for. People like this don't change and your career will go nowhere. I believe it's their own insecurities--and nothing you're doing wrong. Good luck!
