I work in a large corporation. Though my marketing department is large, my specific function has only 2 people in it - a director and myself. She and I interact well, though she assumes a great deal of control over every project and rarely is willing to loosen the reigns. At the same time, what she says I can take on (whatever I want) is very different from what she is willing to let me do in practice. How do I confront and resolve this effectively? I've had several meetings with her regarding my goals and though she is responsive in the meetings, the application is far from what is promised. Any Advise would be immensely appreciated. |

If you seek more autonomy in your position, you will not get it with this person. People like this are very protective of their current status in the organization and probably view their level of control, as necessary for their chances of promotion. You become a tool in this environment. A person who exercises a great deal of control, when they have capable staff, is searching for a constant stream of approval from their superiors.
This person is afraid to completely delegate tasks as then they may not be associated with the success of the project, which is contrary to their personal view of the climb up the corporate ladder. There are managers who can lead and those who push. She is a pusher. I don't see discussion changing her. You either have to deal with it, or look for another opportunity. Sorry, but that is what my experience tells me. LongNTooth
