In Reply To: I work in a large corporation. Though my marketing department is large, my specific function has only 2 people in it - a director and myself. She and I interact well, though she assumes a great deal of control over every project and rarely is willing to loosen the reigns. At the same time, what she says I can take on (whatever I want) is very different from what she is willing to let me do in practice. How do I confront and resolve this effectively? I've had several meetings with her regarding my goals and though she is responsive in the meetings, the application is far from what is promised. Any Advise would be immensely appreciated.
Message: Actually this should not be tough: you must manage your manager. When discussing goals, go a step further: break down the resposibility or the project into its smaller parts and set up two columns, reflecting your responsibilities in the activity and your supervisor's. If she ultimately winds up taking stuff away from you, that's when it's time to have a 3-way discussion with her and her own supervisor present.
