Message: This is a long one, but I sure would appreciate anyone's sage advice. I accepted a contract to hire position through a IT consulting firm, with a very well respected, successful financial company back in August. I was told that the decision would made by the end of the year 2001. Since that time, I have absolutely worked my butt off and delivered lots, and lots of items. The company is tripping over themselves to hire me, and was told recently that I can work in any capacity I choose, essentially. In addition, it is a very unique skill set, that is hard to come by. When I accepted this job, the market was very tight for IT consulting types and it represented an exceptional opportunity to gain some great experience. Money at that point didn't matter, and I could always find something else after the fact. Or, as I planned, get an offer, leverage that against the consulting firm for a big boost in my rate. Currently, my hourly rate is grossly under the market rate, and I've repeatedly gone back to the conusulting firm, demanding a high rate to remain as a consultant with them. They have refused over and over and over again to up my hourly... If I had accepted a job, the consulting firm would not have earned a finder's fee, instead simply lose the revenue I was bringing in. I'm ashamed to admit but I don't even know the bill rate to the client, but it is much higher than what I am being paid. Incidently, I hava a 12 month non-compete agreement ... which they have told me they will enforce! Why would this consulting company not at least offer me a bone and up my rate?! Incidently, the firm is in trouble, and I am offering them an opportunity to keep my hours billed coming in.
